What Am I Missing?

Is it possible that I have what I need and I’m not aware?

Verse of the Day

‘The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.’

Psalms 23:1

Today’s Devotional

There are times when I read this verse and think, “Thank you, God, that you provide everything I need.” There are other times, perhaps more often, that I read this verse and think, “Really? Do I have everything that I need for these specific circumstances? It does not feel like I do.”

Why is it difficult to believe this verse and other verses like it?

Because it takes faith.

If I choose to have faith that this specific verse is true for me, then I have to admit a few things.  I have to admit that I am a sheep and in need of a shepherd. I have to humble myself to realize and admit that I need guidance.  I must decide that God is, in fact, the guiding force of my life. Then I have to declare that I have everything I need in this moment.

So what do we do when we find ourselves in need?

We pray the Bible back to God.

“God, you are my God and my Shepherd.  Thank you for being in charge of my life.  Thank you for wanting to guide me.  Your Word says that I have everything that I need, but right now that does not feel true.  Will you please show me what you are providing me that helps my current situation?  What am I not seeing? Please give me eyes to see your guidance, your help, and your solutions for me today.”

And then we look around with the eyes of faith.  What does God do?

He shows up.

Often in ways that we don’t expect or that don’t make sense right at first.

So we keep asking for help. And clarity. And wisdom.  Because His promises are true and we have everything we need. This is even echoed a couple times in the New Testament:

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 2 Corinthians 9:8

By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 2 Peter 1:3

Let’s have the faith to believe that God has given us what we need for today.  And maybe instead of reminding God what we need, let’s be brave enough to ask Him to show us what He knows we need.
