My Identity in Christ

Who does God say you are? What does God do for you? What does God offer to you? Are you willing to believe what God says about you? Are you willing to accept the responsibility of your calling?

What God says about you:

  • I am made in the image of God. ‘So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.’ Genesis 1:27
  • I am a child of God. ‘See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!’ 1 John 3:1 ‘But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.’ John 1:12 ‘For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.’ Romans 8:16
  • I am loved and chosen by God. ‘Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. ‘ Ephesians 1:4
  • I am not ever forgotten. ‘Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.’ Isaiah 49:15-16
  • I am set apart. ‘I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.’ Jeremiah 1:5
  • I am God’s possession. ‘But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.’ 1 Peter 2:9
  • I am cherished by God. ‘The Lord will not abandon his people, because that would dishonor his great name. For it has pleased the Lord to make you his very own people.’ 1 Samuel 12:22
  • I have a divine plan. ‘For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord . “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.’ Jeremiah 29:11
  • I am known by God. ‘O Lord , you have examined my heart and know everything about me.’ Psalms 139:1
  • My thoughts and movements are known by God. ‘You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.’ Psalms 139:2
  • I am seen by God. ‘You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.’ Psalms 139:3
  • God knows my words. ‘You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.’ Psalms 139:4
  • I am surrounded by God. ‘You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.’ Psalms 139:5
  • I am a citizen of heaven. ‘But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.’ Philippians 3:20
  • I am new. ‘This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!’ 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • I am God’s masterpiece. ‘For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.’ Ephesians 2:10
  • I am a part of the body of Christ. ‘All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.’ 1 Corinthians 12:27
  • I am united with other believers. ‘There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.’ Galatians 3:28
  • I am Jesus’s friend. ‘I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.’ John 15:15
  • Jesus lives inside me. ‘My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.’ Galatians 2:20
  • I am a temple for the Holy Spirit. ‘Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.’ 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
  • I am complete. ‘For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.’ Colossians 2:9-10
  • I am not condemned. ‘So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.’ Romans 8:1
  • I am a branch off of the vine of Jesus. ‘ “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.’ John 15:5
  • I am formed by God. ‘And yet, O Lord , you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.’ Isaiah 64:8
  • I have light from God. ‘For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!’ Ephesians 5:8
  • I am at peace with God. ‘Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.’ Romans 5:1 ‘For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.’ 2 Corinthians 5:21
  • I am not my own. ‘Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.’ 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
  • I am near to God.  ‘But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.’ Ephesians 2:13
  • I was chosen to be like Jesus. ‘For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.’ Romans 8:29
  • I am victorious. ‘No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.’ Romans 8:37

What God does for you:

  • God ransomed me. ‘But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. ‘ Isaiah 43:1
  • God is working within me. ‘Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.’ Ephesians 3:20
  • God is working for my good. ‘And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.’ Romans 8:28
  • The Spirit guides me to truth. ‘When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.’ John 16:13
  • God makes me more like Jesus. ‘So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.’ 2 Corinthians 3:18
  • Nothing can separate me from God’s love. ‘And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Romans 8:38-39
  • In Jesus I can triumph over sin. ‘For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.’ Romans 5:17
  • God goes before me. ‘So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.’ Deuteronomy 31:6
  • God purchased my freedom and forgave me. ‘He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.’ Ephesians 1:7
  • God cleanses me. ‘But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.’ 1 Corinthians 6:11
  • God transforms me. ‘Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.’ Romans 12:2
  • God holds me up. ‘Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10

What God gives you:

  • God gave me Jesus. ‘For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.’ John 3:16
  • Jesus gives me the gift of peace. ‘I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.’ John 14:27
  • God gives me a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. ‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.’ 2 Timothy 1:7
  • God gives me mercy and grace. ‘So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.’ Hebrews 4:16
  • Jesus gives me strength. ‘For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.’ Philippians 4:13
  • Jesus gives me grace. ‘Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.’ 2 Corinthians 12:9
  • God gives me power through the Holy Spirit. ‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ Acts 1:8
  • Jesus fills me with joy. ‘I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!’ John 15:11
  • Jesus gives me freedom. ‘So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.’ John 8:36

What is my responsibility:

  • To believe. ‘Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”’ John 6:29
  • To trust God and seek Him. ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.’ Proverbs 3:5-6
  • To pray and give thanks. ‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.’ Philippians 4:6-7
  • To love like Jesus. ‘This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.’ John 15:12
  • To do good and to share. ‘And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.’ Hebrews 13:16
  • To do right, to love mercy, and to walk humble before God. ‘No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.’ Micah 6:8
  • To forgive. ‘Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.’ Ephesians 4:32 ‘If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.’ Matthew 6:14-15
  • To be teachable. ‘Commit yourself to instruction; listen carefully to words of knowledge.’ Proverbs 23:12 ‘But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.’ John 14:26 ‘All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.’ 2 Timothy 3:16
  • To confess. ‘But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.’ 1 John 1:9 ‘Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.’ James 5:16
  • To praise. ‘Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.’ Hebrews 13:15
  • To share the Good News of Jesus. ‘And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.’ Mark 16:15 ‘Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.’ 1 Peter 3:15
  • To put my faith into action. ‘And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ.’ Philemon 1:6
  • To worship. ‘Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”’ Luke 4:8

He will not rebuke you for asking.’ James 1:5 ‘My help comes from the Lord , who made heaven and earth!’ Psalms 121:2 ‘Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.’ Matthew 7:7
