Humility / Pride

Summary of Humility

How do we embody a life of humility?

Verse of the Day

‘He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.’

John 3:30

Today’s Devotional

In my opinion, today’s verse is the ultimate prayer for humility.  If I am to remove any and all pride from my life, there must be less of me and more of Jesus.  Because pride is all about me.  And humility is all about “not me”.

Just like there are many symptoms of pride, there are also many aspects of humility.  And if humility is the antidote to pride, then I’d like to understand it as fully as I can in order to learn to live a life that points others to Jesus.

Let’s look at what the Bible has taught us about humility:

In humility, we pray, we seek God, and we turn from anything that is prideful.

A humble person boasts in God alone.

A humble person does all things with the motivation of bringing glory to God.

For a humble person, satisfaction in a job well done is enough.  Nothing more is needed.

A humble person is gentle when dealing with others.

In humility, we make allowances for other people’s faults.

A humble person does not self-promote.

Being humble is an act of love.

A humble person thinks well of others.

In humility, we are able to be led by God.

In humility, we are always teachable.

A humble person never stops learning.

A humble person learns from mistakes and failures.

A humble person is curious about the world around him/her.

In humility, we only need to be analyzed by our words and actions – which displays the message of our lives.

Every single day, your physical body needs food, sleep, air, water, and shelter.  Your body needs these things to survive.  What would happen if we looked at our need to remove pride and embody humility as similarly vital to our souls?  The desire of the soul is to continually reconnect with its Creator.  We can only truly connect with God from a position of surrender.  More of Him.  Less of me.  Humility is vital for my soul.

I leave you today with a prayer that comes from Andrew Murray’s book on humility. I changed the wording slightly in order to make it easier for me to pray. Are we brave enough to pray this prayer?

Father, out of your great goodness, I ask that you make known to me and remove from my heart every kind and degree and form of pride- no matter its source. Father, please awaken me to the humility of Jesus. Please teach me how to receive the grace of humility so that I will be capable of shining Your light in this dark world. Till the soil of my heart so that your humility can be rooted within me. Amen.
