God Promises Us Grace
What does grace mean to you?
Verse of the Day
‘Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.’
Today’s Devotional
Let’s talk about grace. It’s a word we use a lot in relation to God and faith, but do we really understand what it means?
Today’s graphic (above) is a picture of the inside cover of my journal. The sticker defines grace as God’s undeserved favor, God’s unmerited favor. I put that sticker in my journal because I need to remind myself often of what grace actually means to me. I don’t deserve God’s favor, nor can I do anything to earn His favor, but He gives it to me anyway. That’s grace.
What does the Bible say about grace?
We are saved by grace. “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
We live under the freedom of grace. “Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.” (Romans 6:14)
God is generous in the giving of grace. “And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” (James 4:6)
God sits on a throne of grace. We can come confidently to Him to receive His grace. “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Hebrews 4:16)
Anything we accomplish is done through God’s grace. “’But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me—and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.” (1 Corinthians 15:10)
There is an abundance of grace. There’s always more. “From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” (John 1:16 New Living translation) “Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.” (John 1:16 New International Version)
Jesus is the revelation of the grace of God. “For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.” (Titus 2:11)
Through Jesus, grace reconciles us with God. “Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.” (Romans 3:24)
Grace can give us strength. “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” (2 Timothy 2:1)
Imagine that Jesus is sitting with you. Picture Him there with you now. He sees you exactly how you are today, the parts you are proud of and everything else too. He looks into your eyes with palpable love and says, “My grace is all you need.”
If grace is promised to us, and grace is abundant, and God is generous in the giving of grace, and Jesus shows us what God’s grace looks like, and grace reconciles us with God, and grace strengthens us… then grace really is all we need.
