God Knows Your Words

Do you always know what you are going to say before you say it?

Verse of the Day

‘You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord .’

Psalms 139:4

Today’s Devotional

I need to admit that this verse makes me laugh.  I hardly ever know what I am going to say before my ears hear what my mouth is saying.  I am not known for having much of a filter over my mouth.  I know it’s bad when my daughter has to say, “Filter, Mom.  Use your filter.”

This verse is a reminder that God knows you better than you will ever know yourself.  We don’t have the capacity to know ourselves as well as our loving God knows each of us.  We don’t even know what we are going to say some of the time. Have you ever had the experience where you look back on a conversation or interaction and think, “Why did I say that?”  That happens to me quite often.  Part of your identity is that your Creator knows you so well that He never wonders why you said what you said.  He knows why.  He knows your thoughts and words before they ever exist to you. Because He cares that deeply about you.

The point of Psalm 139 is for you to know how detailed God’s care and concern is for you.  God has these verses included in His holy Word for a reason.  God wants the truth of His love for you to sink down into your bones.

The beautiful part is that God knows what you are going to say every time you speak AND HE STILL LOVES YOU! He still wants you and desires the kind of relationship with you that will  teach you, everyday, that your identity is determined by Him.  You are His beloved creation.  You are so loved that he knows each of your words. Even before you do.
