God Delights in Us
Do you realize that God is delighted with you?
Verse of the Day
‘The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.’
Today’s Devotional
Our daughter called us to video chat last week after her first day of classes for the fall semester. She told us about her classes, her professors, the projects she will have to do this semester, and even the interesting fashion choices of one of her professors. We also got a version of each professor’s resume; where they had taught before, where they got their degrees, why they are now teaching at her school. We were absolutely delighted to listen to her share the details of her life.
How much more, then, does our loving God delight in every detail of our lives? Every detail!
If you will notice, this promise of God’s concern about our lives is restricted to the “godly”. And it can be hard for us to characterize ourselves as even remotely godly. But if we claim to believe in Jesus, we stand before the Father God as the righteousness of Christ. Case in point:
‘God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.’ (2 Corinthians 5:21)
‘Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.’ (1 John 3:7)
‘God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.’ (1 Corinthians 1:30)
Because of the finished work of Jesus, we are godly. Because we are godly, God is promising us that He will direct our path, that He delights in us and all the details of our lives, that we will never fall, and that He is holding us. That just makes me say, “Thank you, thank you, Jesus.”
I have a hard time wrapping my brain around this level of care and concern that God says He has for us. Sometimes I think that the little things I pray about would blip on God’s radar the way I would be concerned if my child was really stressing over which t-shirt to wear today. (Just pick one! It doesn’t matter!) But today’s verse tells me that I am wrong to think such things. God cares enough to know how many hairs are on my head at any given moment, which changes for me every time I turn my head. (Matthew 10:30)
Sometimes, we must choose to take God at His word, even if it feels too good to be true. He really does care about our lives. Even the minutiae. And no matter how hard that may be to believe, if God says it’s true, then it’s true.
Today, my response to this level of care and concern is gratitude. I’m thankful that He cares about what is weighing me down. I’m thankful that He cares about what I’m dreaming about and hoping for. I’m thankful that He cares about my emotions. I’m grateful that he cares what I’m thinking about. There is something really powerful about being known so fully, accepted so completely, and loved with such abandon.
