Content to Seek God Each Morning
How do your start your day?
Verse for Today
“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”
Today’s Devotional
Imagine that you wake up and everything is rushed. You need to get out the door, you are running late, and you don’t have time to eat or even make coffee. How do you think that day is going to go?
I don’t feel the need to preach very often, because I don’t feel qualified. But pull out the podium and let me arrange my notes.
There is literally no better way to start the day than with God. I don’t care what that looks like for you. It could be sitting outside and praying. It could be reading a devotional on your phone. It could be prayer and journaling. We are humans, and when we start each day we need to be reminded Whose we are and Who is in charge. We need a reminder that we are loved. With a big extravagant love that we can’t begin to comprehend. We need to worship. Let’s look at what else the Bible says about mornings.
- ‘Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.’ (Psalms 143:8)
- ‘The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.’ (Lamentations 3:22-23)
- ‘Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord . Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.’ (Psalms 5:3)
- ‘For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.’ (Psalms 30:5)
- ‘“Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east?’ (Job 38:12)
- ‘But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.’ (Psalms 59:16)
- ‘But I cry to you for help, Lord; in the morning my prayer comes before you.’ (Psalms 88:13)
- ‘Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he got up, went out, and made his way to a deserted place; and there he was praying.’ (Mark 1:35)
- ‘This is the day the Lord has made; let’s rejoice and be glad in it.’ (Psalms 118:24)
My guess is that if you are reading this, you might not need this sermon. But life gets busy and we get distracted. We struggle with living in the world while not being of this world, which means there are things for us to do each day that drag us away from those precious morning moments with God. But maybe they don’t have to. Maybe every time we don’t feel the presence of God, or we don’t FEEL content, we need to return (in our mind and heart) to the feet of Jesus. To a posture of prayer. To a place where God is in control and worthy of our praise. All. Day. Long. Let me close today’s sermon with a quote from Meyer: “There is no hour like that of morning prime for fellowship with God. If we would dare to wait before Him for satisfaction then, the filling of that hour would overflow into all other hours.”

Answer only the questions that seem relevant to you today:
How much priority do you place on spending daily time each morning with God?
If it is already high priority for you, PRAISE Him for that. If it is not, ask for His help to make it part of your everyday schedule. And ask a friend to hold you accountable.
How can you ask God to fill and satisfy you today in a way that overflows all day long?
How does your level of contentment increase or decrease when you start your day with God?
